Just about everyone in NYC has been affected with acne at one point or another. Scars and discolorations acne leaves behind, can make you self conscious about your skin. Here, I’ll review some acne scar treatments that can drastically reduce their appearance. Even though some acne scars are permanent, with proper treatments, some may go away over time. First, let’s briefly review atrophic scars- that is indented scars that form when skin isn’t able to stimulate tissue or collagen, as when pimples or breakouts damage tissue beneath it. These indentations can form in three ways. Ice pick scars (more difficult to treat), rolling scars, and boxcar scars. Now let’s discuss some acne scar treatments we perform here at our NYC office. I’ll begin wit my favorite- microneedling: multiple sessions of microneedling have shown to be efficacious for treatment of acne scars. The microneedling pen or device rapidly puncture skin to create controlled injury, which triggers the body’s healing process. Microneedling for scars is painless, as numbing cream is applied on skin before treatment is started. Like most treatments, it’s important to wear sunscreen to protect your skin. The next treatment for acne scars I’ll review are chemical peels. With the introduction of lasers for skin rejuvenation, chemical peels are not as popular as they once were. However, they’re cost effective, and you can’t compete with the downtime. These chemical solutions penetrate the dermis and correct damaged cells, restoring a vibrant appearance. Acne scars are improved after only a few sessions. Unlike microneedling, chemical peels remove the top layer of the skin. Microdermabrasion-this minimally invasive and basic procedure is still a favorite. Microdermabrasion renews skin texture by removing the skin’s top layer, using a mechanical device. Microdermabrasion is not only considered safe but it’s beneficial for various skin concerns. Dermal fillers- they work best with some types of scars. Dermal fillers improve the skin texture while reducing the appearance of some scars. Some fillers we use at SD Aesthetics here in NYC, are hyaluronic acid based, such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Belotero. Dermal fillers are great for immediate results, and improvements are seen for the next few months. Effects are temporary, lasting anywhere from 6 to 9 months. However, with a combination of other treatments for acne scars discussed previously, a dramatic reduction in the appearance of acne scars can be seen, along with improvements in skin texture. Collagen gives our skin elasticity and flexibility, and our skin is made up of 70% collagen. Unfortunately, as we age, collagen production declines. Exposure to UV light furthers this process. The following anti aging treatments are ideal for correcting the skin and preventing further damage:
*Injectables- such as Botox and fillers. Botox reduces muscle contraction, so that wrinkles are less apparent. Dermal fillers fill in hollows of the skin and lift, giving a more defined appearance of the skin.
*Microneedling- this anti aging treatment improves wrinkles and fine lines without any down time. When microneedles are passed over the skin, the needles create micro injuries to trigger collagen synthesis in the skin. This procedure yields to beautiful and noticeable results in a short time.
*Anti Aging Skincare- professional serums and creams can help diminish and prevent signs of aging. We recommend scheduling a consultation at our Microneedling and Anti Aging Center in NYC so that we can customize an ideal skincare plan for you.
With the shivering cold winter months upon us, we would like to think that we are not exposed to sun rays. Well, newsflash- aging causing UV rays are actually the same strength all year round, even on rainy days. The sun’s dangerous UV rays not only leads to premature aging but to some cancers of the skin. When clients ask what the best anti aging product is, my answer is simple. It’s sunscreen. Period. Daily sunscreen use is a great way of slowing or preventing premature aging and most importantly, in possible prevention of skin cancers. So who should be using sunscreen? Basically, everyone. But don’t be fooled by selling gimmicks. No sunscreen can fully protect your skin from UV rays. Let’s look at it in terms of percentages: SPF of 30 protects 97%, SPF 50 protects 98%, and SPF 15 protects 93%. As you see, there’s only one percent difference, so there’s no need to spend extra on sunscreen that claims 100% protection. Working indoors? Even those working inside are exposed, as UVA can still penetrate through windows. Sunscreen should be applied on the skin 30 minutes before sun exposure, and don’t forget to reapply. Microneedling is an effective procedure for improving a variety of skin conditions. There are many techniques and devices currently in use. Microneedling can treat fine lines, pigmentation, acne, stretchmarks, scars, and skin texture. Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling isn’t limited to the face, it can also be used to treat other areas of the body, including the neck, abdomen, and arms. CIT continues to be a popular treatment for its effectiveness and affordability. There is no topical numbing in superficial microneedling, and a series of treatments spaced 2 to 3 weeks apart are recommended. For vertical devices which are more invasive, a topical anesthetic is applied before the procedure. A series of treatments spaced 5 to 6 weeks apart are recommended. If you’d like to see how this skin rejuvenation treatment can help improve your skin, call our NYC office for more details!
Botox, an approved brand of neuromodulator, is used to temporarily improve appearance of dynamic wrinkles (caused by movement), between the brows and crow’s feet. Its cosmetic approval for use in 78 countries, has made it a highly sought after wrinkle eraser. It has been safely used for over 20 years, and due to its longevity, it has been studied and evaluated many, many times. Botox has also been approved for medical uses, including treatment of migraines, hyperhidrosis (overactive sweat glands), and muscle spasms. At SD Aesthetics, Botox and other injectables are only performed by highly skilled physicians and plastic surgeons with superior level of training. Our physicians have done thousands of injectables and dermal filler treatments, very important for desired results. At our practice you will never find a non physician injecting these products. There are laws that designate who can and cannot administer neuromodulators and dermal fillers. Whether you’re considering Botox for wrinkles or medical reasons, you might be overwhelmed with information. So let us take a look at some common myths:
Myth: Botox can cause botulism
Fact: Even though it is derived from botulinum toxin (bacteria that causes food poisoning), amounts are very small, intended to work only at injection site, where wrinkles form.
Myth: Botox is not safe
Fact: As previously mentioned, Botox received approval by the FDA over 20 years ago to treat certain medical conditions. It has been used on millions of people. Keep in mind that any injectables for appearance enhancement are safest under the hands of a physician and recommended doses. It is of essence finding a doctor with experience to ensure safety and desired results.
Myth: My face will look frozen
Fact: Wrinkles will relax at the point of injection, usually glabellar lines and crow’s feet.
Myth: All of my wrinkles will disappear
Fact: Dynamic wrinkles are treated, that is, those lines that occur during facial expression. Botox doesn’t respond to static wrinkles- wrinkles that are already set on your face, usually a result of sun exposure and other lifestyle factors. I’ll discuss that topic on my next blog.
Myth: Injections are painful
Fact: There is some mild discomfort as with any injections, but needles are super fine. Most clients report a pinching sensation.
Myth: I will get addicted
Fact: It’s most likely you’ll become addicted to your younger, smoother appearance, making you to come back for repeated injections. Neuromodulators do not have any addictive properties.
Myth: My skin will look worse over time
Fact: Once it wears off, your wrinkles will become just how they were originally. The aging process is inevitable, so lines will continue to progress unless it is slowed down by any other anti aging treatment.
Myth: Botox has immediate effects
Fact: The onset of Botox is between 2-14 days, peaking at about two weeks. Depending on some factors, Botox lasts between 3-4 months.
Myth: Botox can be injected in any area of my face
Fact: Botox is approved for lines between the brows and crow’s feet, even though there is off label use for other areas like the neck. .
